Week 7 -- Composite Submission (Week 5 Detail Scan too)
Whew!So here it is, my final blog entry! Had a blast everyone!
Thanks for all your wonderful comments!
Jerry, I got the scans to work--hooray!
You can see a few more on my fotothing @ http://www.fotothing.com/melskigphoto/ .
I was surprised to see how the scanner picks up every speck of dust! But it was definitely worth the effort!
I also had so much "fun" with the composites too!
Thanks again, Professor Nevins, for an amazing MOD!

Surreal Paintings
Hey everyone! Well, this my last posting on Blogger with the surreal paintings. I have to say that this assignment was unexpected, but worth while. It's an interesting way of expressing yourself in a modern, yet creative way! I enjoyed all of your work and wish everyone the best of luck in the rest of the schooling, take care!
Week 7 -- Composite Submission
Week 7 -- Surreal Submission

Can't believe how much fun this surrealistic painting was! I found myself over thinking each of my "canvases" with a lot of repetition, "Path to Enlightenment" for example, but then I created "Dragonfly n' Feathers" and "simple" was achieved!
I also had trouble in sizing my work (not quite sure how to enlarge them)--never quite got the edit/copy/new/paste thing as I always got a message about saving it before I saw the final picture and I didn't want to do lose anything. But they're all there on my fotothing for your viewing pleasure: http://www.fotothing.com/melskigphoto/. I will be the first to admit they are "out there."
Had a great time with all of you and viewing your fabulous work! Not sure if I can join AR336 yet, but I'm going to try to swing it with my schedule. Hope to see you there too!

P.S.
Jerry, at 11:48pm this evening I was resizing all the windows I had open on my laptop and found the "SCAN" icon for my Epson on my desktop of all places. There was never a button on the machine that I could find so I gave up on completing the detail project with any more submissions. But there it was and I tried it and sure enough, it works--that's the test flag you see above--black background and all! I won't be able to fotothing anything until after midnight tomorrow night, but I will grab some flowers and try it if you say I should at this late date. I can however post the flower scans to the blog between 9pm-midnight. Let me know if the 4 pieces were enough. Thanks!

Surreal Pictures
What a fun assignment! Great job everyone. It is amazing how using the same tools, we all have created such different art. You can see the rest of my pictures at http://www.fotothing.com/mkos/photo/350b2f700060049f7f47811555fc59a2/ Thanks for a fantastic class Jerry!

Here are 2 of the pictures that I liked the best out all of them. I enjoyed this project, really brought out the artistic side in everyone. Thanks for everything throughout the class. I enjoyed seeing everyone's and the different perspectives, as well as the feedback on my photos. I hope to see some of you in the second class in Mod 2.

Week 7

Hello All Again!!!
I really enjoyed making these pictures. At first I wasn't sure how to coordinate all of the different objects with the different background. It ended up being really fun. I sent the link to a few of my coworkers, and now they are using this program to create interesting desktop back rounds.
I believe this is our last assignment, so I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this class. I also really enjoyed looking at everyone pictures.
regards,
Stephanie

Week 6
This was the most challenging assignment so far. My first issue was finding a person that wanted to cooperate with the project. I ended up using my mom, but she fought me tooth and nail. To be completely honest I would not want to be photographed either.
In addition, to having difficulty retaining a subject I was not really able to capture the correct lighting to get what the professor wanted. I tried my best, but shooting objects is much easier than shooting people.

Week 5 -- God is in the Details

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go the "digital" route with this assignment due to two obstacles: the scanner I thought I could use creatively only scans paper for printing and the minimum "macro" distance of my digital camera is 3 feet away. I had these shots from my film camera, a Canon EOS Rebel T2, printed and placed onto Photo CD's which I loaded into Picasa2.
I shot them about a month ago on Ender's Island in Mystic, CT. Whether it's peace, serenity, or just plain silence you seek, this oasis delivers. And with its beautiful gardens and butterflies during migrating season (August to September I believe), St. Edmund's Retreat is the ideal place to photograph to your hearts content!
When I realized how bright the sun appears on the tops of the flowers, I warmified them some. I tried to adjust the shadows, but it always resulted in the whole shot going dark--no room for subtlety in Picasa2 without destroying the whole shot.
Jerry, if you would like authentic digital photographs, I will be happy to shoot more this weekend--I just won't be able to get too close. but I could try and crop any results.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks!

Week 6 -- The Digital Portrait
Hello everyone!
I apologize for the delay. Following your suggestions Jerry, here is another shot of Mom with her head toward the light and a revision of Dad's portrait with more light and cropping. The bottom edge of Dad is the true bottom. Also, I noticed the more light I added to him the more "noise" appeared--it got very spotty. In any case, I'll upload some more tomorrow along with my Week 5 Detail shots to my fotothing: www.fotothing.com/melskigphoto/.
Have a great weekend all!

Week 6

This was a very frustrating project for me. I have to remember that this is a learning process. These are three of my better ones. The rest can be seen at http://www.fotothing.com/mkos/.

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

Here are three pictures all of different subjects. I had a difficult time with this project. Not sure if it is my Camera, probably just me, 95% of my pictures are blurry. I am going to try and find another subject to take pictures of. With my work schedule I felt like I was always rushing home to beat the sunlight and would only have a few moments left to capture a good picture.
Week 6

I found this to be a little bit difficult. First I could not find any one who was willing to pose for me. I asked family, friend and coworkers. They all said no. So I decide to pick children (some of my smaller relatives) who just love the camera. But that might have been the wrong decision, it is really hard to get a 5 year old to side still, while you try to get a half way decent shot.

Portrait Assignment...
Here are the main points I'd like you to concentrate on for this assignment... It is all about window light falling across the face....-We have seen an infinite amount of flash in the face, smiley pictures... So now it's time to look a bit more closely....
I took this during an in class demonstration with a 3mp camera, handheld... I turned off the overhead lights and just used window light. Note, there is just soft, indirect light coming through the window... not direct sunlight as that would be too harsh.
-I zoomed in a bit with the camera zoom so that her features would be in good proportion... if you use a wide angle or zoom out, then her features would be distorted...
-The window is on her left elbow... so I leaned into the window with my right shoulder... avoiding looking into the light and getting a sihoulette instead of a portrait.
-I allowed time for any nervousness or silliness to subside... just let the person calm down and let their eyes open.
-I held the camera vertically. Notice where I placed the head? (Upper left corner and even cropped it with the edge of the frame...)
So... model your work on this... take your time... take lost of shots and show us your best work!

Week 4 + 5

Hello everyone,
I apologize for being slightly behind for week 4. I've been out of town the last few weekends and the weeks have been simply crazy at work. At any rate, I wanted to share some photos featuring shadow and light as well as my macro submissions. I hope you enjoy as much as I've enjoyed seeing some of the work posted! Have a great week!
Week 4 & 5

Saturday, September 27, 2008

Here are two of my favorites for this week. I love the crispness and clarity in both shots. The first is a Formosa tree in our backyard after the weekend rain. The second is a newly fallen leaf underneath our grape arbor. Thanks for this assignment Jerry. Sometimes I got so caught up in the hustle and bustle of my life that I forget that my world is truly surrounded by wonder and beauty! My other pictures can be seen on my fotothing http://www.fotothing.com/mkos/Close up shots

BMy Sony 8MP did not take really good closes ups so I used my friends Nikon 6MP with much clearer pictures, two of my best here and more being uploaded at http://www.fotothing.com/dickeykarle/
The macro project.
Here are some important points to keep in mind as you go about doing your macro project.
1. Read up in your camera manual how to put your camera into macro mode. most cameras have a small tulip icon that indicates macro mode... sometimes it's a switch, a dial or button to push on the camera other times it's a menu item you have to set.
2. Your manual also tell you what is the minimum distance you can get from your subject I have a Nikon point and shoot that can go within three quarters of an inch from the subject... others may only get as close as 2 inches.
3. For best results, push the shutter button down half way and allow the camera time to focus. When you're pretty sure it's in sharp focus them gently squeeze the camera the rest of the way. Issues such as camera blur are even more exaggerated when you're in close like that.
4. This rainy weekend is actually great for doing macro shots. Go photograph raindrops. Flower forms look much better under overcast conditions especially in the rain than they do in full sun.
5. Amaze us! Inspire us!

Hello All,
I have been MIA for the past two weeks, and I apologize about that. Life can get away from you sometimes.
I am posting the past two weeks assignment photos and this weeks assignment photos in this one posting.
For the by the see photos I went to the beach with my mother and son. While they played in the sand and cold water I shot about 40+ photos. I thought shooting the beach was difficult because a lot of the shots were so similar. In addition, there is not a lot of color at the beach. It is pretty much black, brown, and clear/murky water.
For the assignment on shadows, and light I took some photos around my neighbor hood. I found this pretty cool. I never really paid attention to the way different objects cast shadows on the ground. We have a lake behind one of the sections of condos, so I also went there in an attempt to get the trees reflecting off of the water.
For the God is in details project I also shot objects in my neighborhood. This was my favorite assignment so far. I enjoyed getting up close to objects, my parakeet, and several different bugs. I followed 2 dragon fly around for several mins, and obtained three up close pictures of them. Out of those three only 1 was worth saving. I also found a bee on a plant, which I was able to capture. I attempted to take a photo of a butterfly and a beetle, but they were not being cooperative. I also was able to capture my parakeet at a close angle, so he appeared to be much larger than he really is.
I found it so amazing what detail there is in objects of nature up close. I also never thought my camera would shoot so well at such a close angle.
I will post my last three weeks photos over the next several day due to the fact that we are only able to post 5 photos at a time on fotothing.
hope you enjoy them!
Stepping out of bounds for just a moment...
I have chosen to take the "Shadow" out of the assignment and post this series of "Light" that I captured at the Guilford Fair on Saturday.
Had a ton of fun tweaking them--the possibilities are endless!
Jerry, please let me know if I should delete this post as it doesn't conform to assignment.
Thanks,
-Melanie

Week Four Shadow & Light Submissions -- Curtains
What a challenge!
I'm always looking at shadows and light on a daily basis, but trying to photograph exactly what I see with my eyes is quite a different test. I first went outdoors searching for just the right shadow (patiently waiting for the shadow to move right where I wanted it to be), but eventually ended up indoors capturing the basic household curtain!
You can see more on my fotothing @ http://www.fotothing.com/melskigphoto/.

Week 4 Shadows and Light
So far, I have found this assignment to prove the most challenging. As I am a novice to photography, I am still working at figuring out the lighting for different shots. I am having a load of fun along the way though. This is a close-up of a fire hydrant at the pond across the street from our house.
This picture was taken at a neighborhood playground this weekend. This is the trunk and exsposed roots of an enormous tree that shades the playscape. It almost seems as though this tree has prepared to run away! I love the way the light filters down through the leaves. you can see more pictures in my fotothing portfolio http://www.fotothing.com/mkos/.

By the Sea
Week Three -- By the Sea Submission
Hello all!
So sorry for the late submission--life simply got in the way this week. In the spirit of Edward Weston (although I stuck with color rather than b&w), I choose for my By The Sea submission these two images of rock formations from the seawall at Chaffinch Island in Guilford, CT.
Without the flash, both original images came out somewhat bluish so I warmified them a bit. Of the left image--I like how the soft focus draws you in to the marbled rock in the center. Of the right image--I like how the two splashes of light dance on the rock.
I'll upload some more images tomorrow to my fotothing album @ http://www.fotothing.com/melskigphoto/ as I've reached my limit for today. What beautiful submissions from everyone so far!

Hey Everyone! Here are my two favorite pictures for assignment "By the Sea". I picked the top one because of it's clarity and texture. I picked the bottom one for it's color contrast. The orange/black contrast is from the light behind me hitting the sand and my shadow. Fun!

A few of my other favorites can be seen on Fotothing (although I will have to post the link later- the website seems to be down at this time). Week 2 - Part 2
Hello everyone!
I, too, felt I had to shoot some more yesterday and today.
And I'm using some more of the Picasa tools such as Sharpen and Warmify--what a difference!
The railroad platform in Branford looks so much better in B&W.

And did you know there is an elevator in the Rosary Hall Library? Creepy yet so beautiful!

Check out fotothing for a few more library shots, too!
Thanks!

Repost
I did some additional editing on this particular photo. It was previously posted on my Fotothing. I took the original down thinking that would allow me to post the new one with the changes but alas, it said 5 was my limit for the day. I'll repost the original to my Fotothing tomorrow along with this one.
I corrected the horizon and had some fun with the coloring. I really like the saturation feature on Picasa!

Week Two work

I am sure finding this class vey relaxing. My family and I took a stroll through our town green and to Todd's Pond which are both withing walking distace from our house. Here are two of my favorites for this week. Check out the rest of my photos at http://www.fotothing.com/mkos/.
Week 2
Good Afternoon All,
Hope all is well.
For this project I went to down town wallingord, and shot different objects & structures. I spent almost 2 hours walking around with my son and husband looking for good shots. Not sure if I captured what the professor was looking for, but I sure had fun. I was also surprised with how many interesting structures there were in downtown wallyworld.
At the end of our walk I ended up with 43 photos.
I have posted my two favorite structure images, and the rest are on the fotothing web page. http://www.fotothing.com/sareinoso/
Looking forward to seeing all of your photos!

Week Two Composition Submission
Hope you're all weathering Hanna as best you can! Having briefly lost power tonight myself, I thought it appropriate to upload this particular Week Two Composition Submission shot of a kite blowing in the wind in Guilford, CT. I stood on the sidewalk for some time waiting for the right angle to showcase the pattern of vibrant colors. I would have liked to crop the wire out, but I would have lost the kite's tail. Hope you like it. I have uploaded some other composition photo's on my fotothing @ www.fotothing.com/melskigphoto. Looking forward to seeing your "compositions!"

Week 2
Hi Everyone... By now you should all be up to speed... This week we will dig in with an emphasis on composing our images using the built environment... Take a walk in your local town... look for elements of design and light. Fill the frame and move in close... I don't want to see pictures of whole buildings, rather I'd like you to thing more abstractly... The shapes in the frame become a language of their own.... shoot more than you think is comfortable and edit your work down to the best 6 - 10 shots for the week....
Melanie has taken some very inventive self portraits using store windows in Guilford... See how she moves in and fills the frame? Here and Here.
Have fun!

Hi Everyone! My name is Jenna. I am 28 years old and work in a dental practice in Milford. I am currently a General Studies major hoping to be finished in Mod 1 of next year only to begin a two year program in the medical field. Photography has been something I have always been interested in and am very excited to be taking a digital photography class. I have taken a few film photography classes in the past but have never been given the opportunity or been taught from a digital aspect. I am excited to learn a new artistic side of photography and to be able to manipulate and enhance photos the way I am unable to in a dark room. I feel this class is going to be a great learning experience and can't wait to learn from and see everyones ideas and techniques.
Hello All,
My name is Stephanie. I am a 25 year old mother, wife, student, and claim adjuster. I have 4 classes left to complete my bachelor’s degree in psychology. I will hopefully complete it this spring, and walk across the stage.
I became a mother for the first time in January. I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, and he is the love of my life. I took this self portrait in the morning before I left my house to start my day. Currently my son if having a bit of separation anxiety, so he is attached to me almost 24/7 when i am with him. This is why you see a little hand in the lower right of the photo.

My name is Melanie and I am a Senior here @ Albertus. I aspire to graduate in May with a Bachelor's in General Studies! I live in Branford and have worked in the Accounting Dept. @ Honeywell for the past 12 years. I'm single and have no children--perhaps someday. Having worked with numbers for so long, I thought it was about time to finish up my degree which I began @ St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY. For so long, I was told by many that photography is simply a hobby. I set out to prove 'em wrong by taking pictures for the student newspaper and taking a B&W Photo class @ RIT. I absolutely loved every minute of every day when I was taking pictures--and still do! Enrolling in this Digital Photography course will be the ultimate challenge for me, though, as I have traditionally photographed the world with film. I must admit it has become quite an expensive "hobby" as I watch more and more print shops close and I have to drive farther and farther away--although I do love to travel. When I'm not driving 50 miles to my favorite print shop, I love walking on the beach (Water's Edge in Westbrook is a fave), beach combing for shells (I've perfected the Sanibel Stoop), fishing (love Chaffinch Island in Guilford & Nantucket, too), browsing bookstores with Java Chip Frap in hand and watching foreign films. I apologize in advance for the length of this entry--I'll keep it short next time! Well, I look forward to "meeting" all of you here and viewing your work too! I hope you are all enjoying your Labor Day holiday. Please feel free to join me on fotothing at the following link: www.fotothing.com/Melskigphoto

What Do I Have to Do For Class?
By Next Tuesday you need to
-Join this blog by clicking on the link blogger sent you (from me) that brings you to a sign up page to join the blog... you don't need to create your own blog.... just join this one. This is our classroom. When you post here, that is like coming to class.... If you are not posting, that is like skipping class. Coming to class is the most important component of your grade... along with the work you create for your portfolio. If you create a brilliant portfolio but avoid posting to this blog, the highest grade you could receive for this class is a "C".
-Set up your fotothing.com account and send me an email inviting me as your friend. That way I can add you to the class meeting area on fotothing. Post 6 -10 images per week at a minimum on fotothing... Comment on other students' work there. Use this blog to show us an example of what you are doing and invite others to view the rest of your work on fotothing.
-Read the syllabus and take a look at all of the projects listed.... You can work on them one by one or at the same time as the spirit moves you... It is very important that you work consistently through the class and not disappear... read through the Criteria for grading linked on the upper right of the blog...
-Download and install your image editing program. I recommend Photoshop CS3 available as a free download from http://adobe.com/downloads it will expire in 30 days though :-(
Picasa has been popular for Photo I and is free....
-Post a quick bio and hello to the blog... you should up load a photo of yourself too!
-By Tuesday night, post an example of the first project here on the blog and a link to your fotothing account where you will have 4 examples of the self portrait project....
That's it for the first week. If you have any questions, please email me at jnevins@albertus.edu

Hello,
My name is Maureen. I am a Social Science major and this is also my first Art course at Albertus. I have two children 10 &12 that keep me very busy along with my full time job here at the college. In my spare time, I love going to tag sales, flea markets, spending time with my family and our Golden Retriever, Rosie. I am hoping this class will teach me new ways to make the most of every day photo opportunities to capture all the memories I can of my growing family.

Hello all..
My name is Rich and I will cross that elusive stage in May, garnering a business degree and finance major, ending 5 straight years of college. I chose this course as an elective because I enjoy great pictures and want to learn how to take them. My interests include rock n roll, outdoor activities, camping, fishing, 4 Wheeling and especially Octoberfests...

Hey all! my name is Rebekah and I'm a psychology major with the chance of graduating in Dec. I've never taken a photography class or an art class at that in my college experience, so I'm both anxious and excited for this class. Some things I like to do on my spare time is cook, hike, swim or basically anything that has to do with food or outside activities, I'm there! Looking forward to improving my photography skills with all of you. Good luck!

Hi Everyone!
My name is Mike Burch. I'm a Communications major hoping to graduate this coming May. I work in the advertising industry where as you can imagine, photography and digital image manipulation comes heavily into play. I'm currently a copy editor but looking to get more involved in all aspects of the business, including the graphics and art side. I'm a musician on the side and love to spend my free time in the summer on the water. Nice to meet you all!
Welcome Everyone

Hi Everyone and welcome to the blog for the Mod 1, 2008 online digital photography class!
This class may be unlike any other class you have ever taken. You success is entirely driven by your shooting and creative activity. Weekly assignments are designed you get you to see and think more "photographically". There are no tests or papers due in this class.... rather, you will be creating an online portfolio of your work as you move from week to week. Quality AND quantity count. Keeping up with your work on a week to week basis also counts. Everything you need to complete this class successfully can be found in the class syllabus linked from the list of links on the right. Wednesday I'll post a step by step "What do I have to do this week"? list of things to do. Not to worry though! This class is designed with the beginner in mind and it IS supposed to fun and enriching... I am here to help you succeed.
Any season of the year is good to be taking this class... Summer into Fall is a particularly good time. ..Allow yourself time to shoot each week during daylight hours... it's your assignment to do so each week. We are luck to have light until 7:00 p.m. now The very best light to shoot under is the hour up until sunset... say 6:30 - 7:30 pm or the hour after dawn. The light is beautiful then. I will be encouraging you to use light expressively throughout this class and no flash pictures are allowed!
....You can post to the blog and your portfolio from any computer on the Internet from any where in the world. I'm looking forward to getting started with you...
