Hello all!

My name is Melanie and I am a Senior here @ Albertus. I aspire to graduate in May with a Bachelor's in General Studies! I live in Branford and have worked in the Accounting Dept. @ Honeywell for the past 12 years. I'm single and have no children--perhaps someday. Having worked with numbers for so long, I thought it was about time to finish up my degree which I began @ St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY. For so long, I was told by many that photography is simply a hobby. I set out to prove 'em wrong by taking pictures for the student newspaper and taking a B&W Photo class @ RIT. I absolutely loved every minute of every day when I was taking pictures--and still do! Enrolling in this Digital Photography course will be the ultimate challenge for me, though, as I have traditionally photographed the world with film. I must admit it has become quite an expensive "hobby" as I watch more and more print shops close and I have to drive farther and farther away--although I do love to travel. When I'm not driving 50 miles to my favorite print shop, I love walking on the beach (Water's Edge in Westbrook is a fave), beach combing for shells (I've perfected the Sanibel Stoop), fishing (love Chaffinch Island in Guilford & Nantucket, too), browsing bookstores with Java Chip Frap in hand and watching foreign films. I apologize in advance for the length of this entry--I'll keep it short next time! Well, I look forward to "meeting" all of you here and viewing your work too! I hope you are all enjoying your Labor Day holiday. Please feel free to join me on fotothing at the following link: www.fotothing.com/Melskigphoto

What Do I Have to Do For Class?

By Next Tuesday you need to

-Join this blog by clicking on the link blogger sent you (from me) that brings you to a sign up page to join the blog... you don't need to create your own blog.... just join this one. This is our classroom. When you post here, that is like coming to class.... If you are not posting, that is like skipping class. Coming to class is the most important component of your grade... along with the work you create for your portfolio. If you create a brilliant portfolio but avoid posting to this blog, the highest grade you could receive for this class is a "C".

-Set up your fotothing.com account and send me an email inviting me as your friend. That way I can add you to the class meeting area on fotothing. Post 6 -10 images per week at a minimum on fotothing... Comment on other students' work there. Use this blog to show us an example of what you are doing and invite others to view the rest of your work on fotothing.

-Read the syllabus and take a look at all of the projects listed.... You can work on them one by one or at the same time as the spirit moves you... It is very important that you work consistently through the class and not disappear... read through the Criteria for grading linked on the upper right of the blog...

-Download and install your image editing program. I recommend Photoshop CS3 available as a free download from http://adobe.com/downloads it will expire in 30 days though :-(
Picasa has been popular for Photo I and is free....

-Post a quick bio and hello to the blog... you should up load a photo of yourself too!

-By Tuesday night, post an example of the first project here on the blog and a link to your fotothing account where you will have 4 examples of the self portrait project....

That's it for the first week. If you have any questions, please email me at jnevins@albertus.edu

Hello,

My name is Maureen. I am a Social Science major and this is also my first Art course at Albertus. I have two children 10 &12 that keep me very busy along with my full time job here at the college. In my spare time, I love going to tag sales, flea markets, spending time with my family and our Golden Retriever, Rosie. I am hoping this class will teach me new ways to make the most of every day photo opportunities to capture all the memories I can of my growing family.

Hello all..

My name is Rich and I will cross that elusive stage in May, garnering a business degree and finance major, ending 5 straight years of college. I chose this course as an elective because I enjoy great pictures and want to learn how to take them. My interests include rock n roll, outdoor activities, camping, fishing, 4 Wheeling and especially Octoberfests...

Hey all! my name is Rebekah and I'm a psychology major with the chance of graduating in Dec. I've never taken a photography class or an art class at that in my college experience, so I'm both anxious and excited for this class. Some things I like to do on my spare time is cook, hike, swim or basically anything that has to do with food or outside activities, I'm there! Looking forward to improving my photography skills with all of you. Good luck!

Hi Everyone!

My name is Mike Burch. I'm a Communications major hoping to graduate this coming May. I work in the advertising industry where as you can imagine, photography and digital image manipulation comes heavily into play. I'm currently a copy editor but looking to get more involved in all aspects of the business, including the graphics and art side. I'm a musician on the side and love to spend my free time in the summer on the water. Nice to meet you all!

Welcome Everyone

Hi Everyone and welcome to the blog for the Mod 1, 2008 online digital photography class!

This class may be unlike any other class you have ever taken. You success is entirely driven by your shooting and creative activity. Weekly assignments are designed you get you to see and think more "photographically". There are no tests or papers due in this class.... rather, you will be creating an online portfolio of your work as you move from week to week. Quality AND quantity count. Keeping up with your work on a week to week basis also counts. Everything you need to complete this class successfully can be found in the class syllabus linked from the list of links on the right. Wednesday I'll post a step by step "What do I have to do this week"? list of things to do. Not to worry though! This class is designed with the beginner in mind and it IS supposed to fun and enriching... I am here to help you succeed.

Any season of the year is good to be taking this class... Summer into Fall is a particularly good time. ..Allow yourself time to shoot each week during daylight hours... it's your assignment to do so each week. We are luck to have light until 7:00 p.m. now The very best light to shoot under is the hour up until sunset... say 6:30 - 7:30 pm or the hour after dawn. The light is beautiful then. I will be encouraging you to use light expressively throughout this class and no flash pictures are allowed!

....You can post to the blog and your portfolio from any computer on the Internet from any where in the world. I'm looking forward to getting started with you...

-Jerry
